Artist Biography by Alvaro Neder

Cassiano was a precursor of soul music in Brazil, influencing early proponents of the style like Tim Maia. Among his hits as author/interpreter are 'A Lua E Eu' (with Paulo Zdanowski, 1976), which was included in a popular soap opera, and 'Coleção' (also written with Paulo Zdanowski), was included in the soap opera Loco-motivas, which also had a theme from the instrumental soul group Banda Black Rio, 'Maria Fumaça.' As a composer, he had hits with 'Mister Samba' (recorded by Alcione), 'Primavera' and 'Eu Amo Você' (by Tim Maia), and 'Morena' (by Gilberto Gil). Marisa Monte, Djavan, Ed Motta, and other artists paid homage to him on his CD Cedo Ou Tarde (1991). At six, he moved with his family to Rio. He took mandolin and violão (acoustic guitar) lessons with his father. In 1964, he joined the Bossa Trio, later Os Diagonais, a group which backed him in a couple of singles and on the LP Cada Um Na Sua 1971, RCA). In 1970, Tim Maia recorded his 'Primavera' and 'Eu Amo Você' (both with Sílvio Rochael) on Maia's debut LP (which also had Cassiano on the guitar). Cassiano recorded five other LPs (one of which remained unreleased) and Ed Motta personally organized his first compilation in 2001.

I've worked on this compilation about the brazilian 70's soul genious Cassiano. He released only 3 albuns and the original Lp's are very hard to find today. Cassiano is a must listen for the fans of sweet Philly soul ballads and Northern Soul mixed with brazilian harmony changes. 01 - 500 Graus – CD Recompensa - 00:0002 - Com Muito Louvor – CD Com Muito Louvor - 05:2503 - Imagine - CD Sem palavras - 10:3104 - Para Sempre - CD Para Sem. Cassiano’s mother, Zivia, has proven to be a very important for the Holsteiner breeding program; notably her first-class offspring like Candyman (Tony Hassman) winner at World Cup QF and Cim Christo, 14th at the 2004 Olympics. Zivia is a daughter of the much valued Calypso II, a stallion whose offspring is successful in both the show jumping.

At the foot of the Dolomite peaks of Lavarela and Conturines, at 1,537 m above sea level, lies the charming little mountain village of San Cassiano. Along with a plethora of convivial and elegant restaurants – including one Michelin-starred restaurant – the village, which attracts an international clientele, offers a wide choice of accommodation, ranging from exclusive hotels, comfortable hostelries and holiday homes to family-run B&Bs and a camping site admidst pristine nature
The pedestrian area in San Cassiano is particularly popular with visitors and inhabitants alike, with its cafés, bars, restaurants and a splendid choice of shopping opportunities.

In summer, families and casual walkers enjoy strolling through the sunny Armentarola and Störes meadows, along the “Larch Trail” (sentiero dei larici) and the “Meditation Trail” (sentiero di meditazione). Those who prefer a longer hike will appreciate the spectacular trails in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and up to the Lagazuoi Mountain.
The mountains all around San Cassiano are of great geological and historical interest. You can see several testimonies to the tragic history of the First World War all around the Lagazuoi Mountain. At the foot of the Conturines you can join a guided hike to the well-preserved cave dwelling of the prehistoric cave bear ‘ursus ladinicus’. The Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, in the centre of the village, is dedicated to that same cave bear.
