I don't think people make enough custom spells and magic items in D&D.
Lets make a thread of interesting magic items and custom spells we have created.
I'll start.
The Casters Stave
Masterwork quarterstaff
No powers until someone attunes to it and becomes its owner.
This requires performing a 5 hour ritual and 50gp of components.
The staff then remains attuned until someone else performs the ritual.
Once attuned the staff has the following powers.
owner can command the staffs end to glow like a torch and extinguish itself at will. (command word)
owner can cast prestidigitation at will as long as the staff is within 30 feet. (spell trigger)
If the staff is set down by its owner, it will remain balanced on its end.
The owner can call the staff into his hands at will. The staff teleports into the owners hand from wherever it happens to be. Planar boundaries will not affect this power but anti teleportation / magic effects on the staff (not the wielder) will. If the staff is attended (in a creatures possession) this power fails.(command word).
If anyone other than the owner has the staff in their possession, the staff bestows two permenant negative levels on them until they put it down. Nothing else can reduce or remove the penalty.
UMD DC to use an effect:
light: 20
prestidigitation: 20
summon: 80
avoid negative levels: 25 (check once per hour)
cost: 10000GP
to craft Requires: light, prestidigitation, planeshift, sending, magehand CL 8th craft wonderous item

Dnd 3.5 Magical Affinity

Magic Item Compendium also standardizes rules on body slots, the identification of items, and other magic-item-related tasks and unsurprisingly includes the ever-present bonus action types for 3.5e: swift and immediate actions. I allow one item per slot, with the exception of rings. Two rings may be magic, one on each hand. You can wear as many mundane rings as your fingers can fit if you choose. I also only allow for two weapon sets. Usually a melee and ranged set. So the Bard can't be switching out his 5 magic weapons during combat.
